The costs involved
The path to a Florida Garage Door Installation Specialty Contractor license carries several separate charges. Plan for each of these buckets:
- Trade-knowledge exam fee. The 55-question garage door trade exam is delivered by computer through Pearson VUE, and the testing vendor charges a sitting fee. If you have to retake it, you pay again.
- Business & Finance exam fee. The license also requires passing the Florida Contractors Business & Finance exam (120 questions) — a separate exam with its own fee. It is a one-time exam, so if you already passed it for another active Florida license you generally won't retake or re-pay for it.
- Application and license fees. The DBPR charges to process your license application and to issue the license itself. These are state fees, separate from the exam charges.
- Insurance and financial responsibility. Florida requires specialty contractors to carry insurance and meet financial-responsibility requirements, which is an ongoing cost rather than a one-time fee.

Why there are two exam fees
Many first-timers budget only for the trade exam and get caught out by the second one. Florida separates trade competence from running a contracting business, so the license requires both the garage door trade exam and the Business & Finance exam.
