Garage door opener installation in Florida: who can do what

The garage door specialty license covers the door and its operation. It does not cover the 120-volt circuit that feeds a powered operator — that has to be subcontracted to a licensed electrical contractor. Here is the full boundary, plus what UL 325 requires of the operator itself.

Why the circuit is a different trade

An operator is a piece of door equipment; the circuit that powers it is building wiring. Florida draws the line there deliberately. A garage door specialty contractor can hang the operator, connect it to the door, wire its low-voltage safety devices and set it up — but running or altering the 120-volt supply is electrical contracting.

In practice this means an opener installation into an existing, properly located receptacle is straightforward, while an installation that needs a new circuit, a new receptacle, or a relocated supply needs an electrician on the job. Pricing an opener retrofit without checking whether power already exists at the right place is a common way to lose money on a job.

UL 325 and entrapment protection

UL 325 is the standard governing safety requirements for powered door operators, including entrapment protection. It is the reason modern operators reverse when something interrupts them, and it is examined material on the licensing exam.

The practical requirements it drives on an installation:

An operator that reverses only sometimes is not a nuisance to be tuned out. Defeating or bypassing entrapment protection to stop callbacks is exactly the practice the standard exists to prevent.

The operator is not the counterbalance

A point that catches homeowners and inexperienced installers alike: the opener does not carry the weight of the door. The counterbalance system — torsion or extension springs, cables, and drums — does. The operator only overcomes the small residual imbalance and drives the door along its travel.

So an operator that struggles, stalls, or reverses on close is usually reporting a counterbalance problem, not an operator problem. Replacing the opener to fix a spring issue is a repair that does not hold, and it puts a motor in place of a spring system that is out of adjustment or failing.

Permits

Swapping an operator into existing power is generally light work. But the moment the job involves new electrical supply, or is bundled with a door replacement or counterbalance work, it is part of a permitted job. The door side of that is the specialty contractor's to pull; the electrical side belongs to the electrical contractor.

Can a homeowner install their own opener?

On your own primary residence, Florida's owner-builder exemption can allow work on your own home within its limits, and the work still has to meet code and pass any required inspection. The exemption does not extend to doing paid opener work for other people — that requires the license. And a homeowner is no more entitled than a contractor to run a new 120-volt circuit outside the rules.
