The short version
Two separate qualifications: pressure (can the door resist the positive and negative design load at that opening) and, in windborne-debris regions, impact (can it survive being struck by debris, or is it protected). Both are documented by a Florida Product Approval or a Miami-Dade NOA, and both depend on the door being anchored exactly as the approval says.
Why the garage door decides how the house does
In a storm the garage door is the largest and weakest part of the building envelope. When it fails, wind enters and pressurises the structure from the inside while the roof is under suction from the outside. That internal-plus-external combination is what removes roofs. Upgrading a garage door is one of the few single changes that meaningfully alters how a house behaves in a hurricane.
That is also why the code treats it as a rated assembly and why the approval paperwork exists at all.
Rated for pressure
Design pressure is the load the door must resist at its own opening. It varies with wind speed for the location, site exposure, building height, and the position of the opening — so it is worked out per job. The door is then selected to meet or exceed that number.
This is where a lot of "hurricane door" marketing falls apart. A door with an impressive-sounding rating is only adequate if that rating covers the pressure at your opening, at your door width. Approvals are size-dependent: the same model can be rated for one width and not for a wider one.
Rated for impact
In windborne-debris regions, resisting pressure is not enough — the opening also has to deal with flying debris. That is satisfied either by an assembly tested for impact, or by approved protection over the opening. It is an extra qualification stacked on top of the pressure rating, and it narrows the choices considerably.
The distinction matters when quoting. A door that is fine for pressure in one part of the state may not be permittable in a debris region without impact qualification.
What does NOT make a door hurricane rated
- Weight or gauge alone. A heavy door with no approval for your pressure is not rated.
- Adding struts to an unrated door. Reinforcement is part of a tested assembly, not a way to upgrade one that was never tested.
- A brace kit installed before a storm. Temporary bracing may help, but it does not turn an unrated door into a rated one for code purposes.
- The brand. Approvals attach to specific models, sizes, and configurations — not to manufacturers.
- A rated door anchored the wrong way. This is the big one. The approval covers door and anchoring together.
If the fasteners, spacing, jamb construction, or strut placement differ from the approval, the door is no longer the assembly that was tested — regardless of what is stamped on it.
Retrofitting an existing opening
Upgrading an older opening is rarely just a door swap. The load has to go somewhere, and older jambs and framing were often not built for the fastening the approval now demands. Common realities:
- The jambs may need to be rebuilt or replaced to accept the specified anchors.
- What the jamb is fastened into matters as much as the jamb itself.
- Track and bracket attachment points may move to satisfy the approved detail.
- The opening width may not match any size covered by the intended approval.
All of this is permitted work requiring a licensed Garage Door Installation Specialty Contractor, and it is inspected against the approved detail.
For homeowners
A few things worth asking before signing:
- What is the design pressure at my opening, and what is this door approved for at this width? A confident answer to both is a good sign.
- Can I see the Florida Product Approval or NOA? It should exist and cover your size — here is how to read one.
- Am I in a windborne-debris region, and is this door impact qualified?
- Are you pulling the permit in your own name? If they ask you to pull it, that is a warning sign.

Wind maps, approval requirements, and debris-region boundaries change over time and are applied differently by individual building departments. Verify current requirements with the authority having jurisdiction before quoting or installing.
