What the document actually contains
People treat an approval as a pass/fail stamp. It is closer to a spec sheet. Expect to find:
- The exact product — model or series, construction, and configuration. Not the brand generally.
- Sizes covered — maximum width and height. This is the one most often overlooked.
- Design pressures achieved — positive and negative, often varying by size.
- Impact qualification, if any, for windborne-debris use.
- Anchoring detail — fastener type, diameter, length, and spacing along the jamb and at the track brackets.
- What the jamb must be and what it fastens into.
- Reinforcement — where struts go and how many.
- Limitations and expiry — approvals are not permanent.
Matching an approval to your opening
Work in this order. Reversing it is how jobs get rejected:
- Establish the design pressure at the opening. It depends on wind speed for the location, site exposure, building height, and where the opening sits — so it is a per-job number, not a statewide one.
- Measure the opening. Width especially. Pressure ratings usually fall as width grows.
- Find a door whose approval covers that size at that pressure. Both conditions, together.
- Check debris-region requirements. If applicable, the assembly needs impact qualification or approved protection.
- Read the anchoring detail before quoting. If the existing jambs cannot take the specified anchors, rebuilding them is part of the job and part of the price.
The classic estimating mistake: pricing a door on its headline rating, then discovering the approval only reaches that pressure at a narrower width than the opening — or that it demands a jamb the building does not have.
What voids an approval
The approval covers the door and its installation as one tested assembly. These break it:
- Substituting fasteners — different type, diameter, or length than specified
- Changing fastener spacing, usually to save time or because layout did not work out
- Omitting struts or reinforcement the approval requires
- Anchoring into a jamb or substrate the approval does not contemplate
- Installing wider or taller than the approved size range
- Mixing components across products — another manufacturer's track or hardware
Any of these turns a rated door into an unrated installation. The label still says what it was tested as; the building no longer has that thing in it.
What to hand the building department
Expect to show the approval covering the specific product and size, the design pressure established for the opening, and the anchoring detail you are installing to. At inspection the check is straightforward: does the installed assembly match the approved one. Fasteners, spacing, struts, and the jamb attachment are the recurring failure points.
Keep the document with the job, not just in the office. An inspector asking which approval a door is installed under does not want to wait for an email.
Approvals expire and get revised
Approvals carry dates and get superseded. A number you have used for years may have been revised with a different anchoring schedule, or may no longer be current. Pulling a fresh copy for each job is cheap; discovering at inspection that you installed to a superseded detail is not.
